Verbs and Adverbs

Verbs and Adverbs
IALT: Explain the difference between verbs and adverbs.
Bula Vinaka and Greetings to you all.
Yesterday we had a writing session with Miss Aireen. This week we have a new form of writing that we are focusing on and it is Procedural Writing. Procedural writing is a type of writing that is written step by step and it uses verbs and adverbs.

A verb is a doing word or an action word that explains what action you do next. For example in a baking recipe some of the verbs they use are mix, add, stir and pour.

An adverb is a word that describes a verb or another adverb. For example the sang the chorus loudly, They sand the song slowly and they ran quickly to the Bus.

IALT: Reflect on my poetry writing
This term our inquiry focus is Natural Disasters and for writing we were learning how to write poems. We combined poetry with Natural Disasters and then our task was created. Our task was to create a poem about the stages of a natural disaster. I really enjoyed writing my poem because I found it easy to find rhymes for my different topics. One thing that I found really challenging was trying to make sure that I had figurative language in every stanza. I used figurative language such as similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia and personification.

I think that one thing that I could add to my poem would be having more onomatopoeias to give it more affect and to make my readers  feel more emotions. I think that my next steps are to finish of my artwork that will go with my poem so I will be able to present it to my class.
Here is my poem that I have finished writing and here is my screencastify recording of me reading my poem with expression.
Question: What Natural Disaster do you know the most about?

The Vile Volcano

The Tectonic plates moved, from left to right,
And they walked away, like somebody ended the fight.
The Magma rose through the cracks, like it knew what to do,
But it was trapped in a Volcano, with no clue.
The Pressure built up, like helium in a balloon,
It was so tight inside the Magma Chamber, it was like a caterpillar in its cocoon.

On the side of the Volcano, a Bulge of Magma grew,
The more it filled with pressure, it looked like somebody ready to spew.
The Volcano couldn’t handle, the pressure inside,
Everybody started to remember, those that have died.
The feeling of fear, filled the air,
And we were all grateful for growing up, with Love and Care.

RUMBLE! RUMBLE!  “THE BEAST IS AWAKE!”,
Run for cover everyone, it’s not an Earthquake.
The Lava shoots out the Crater, like a Firework into the night sky,
And it demolishes a house, like an arrow hitting the bullseye.
Everyone screams in terror, as the Lava flows down,
And everyone is wondering, is this the end of our Town?

The Lava concealed the Forest and all the Trees are gone,
But we tried to think positive and sing a song.
It was no help and we were wanting to escape,
We needed to rebuild our town, but it couldn’t be fixed with tape.
So we all took responsibility and we all did our part,
Our lives and town weren’t perfect, but they were at Heart.

My Pepeha

My Pepeha
IALT: Share my Pepeha
Kia ora and greetings to you all. This week is Te wiki o te reo maori (Maori language week) and we have started off the week by writing our Pepeha. In the beginning of the year we wrote a Pepeha but our new Pepeha that we wrote on Monday, had more about our tribes and our family. I really enjoyed writing my Pepeha because i got to learn where my peers have come from and their tribes.
One thing that I found very challenging was trying to pronounce the word "inaianei" which was in the sentence that you say to tell people where you live. I think that my next steps are to practice reading my pepeha so I can get the words right.

Question: He aha nga mea rawe kia koe?

Maths with Ms Komor

Maths with Ms Komor
IALT: Add and Subtract fractions with the same denominator.
Image result for mathsToday in the first block we had Maths with Ms Komor in Room 9. We started with a whole class maths problem and I found the task challenging because I wasn't very sure how to add and subtract fractions, to make the denominator the same. Once Ms Komor explained how to answer the problem I understood the strategy. Afterwards we moved onto a follow up task and in that task we were given fraction equations that we were meant to answer using a mixed fraction. I didn't really find this challenging because I knew what strategy to use and I knew how to explain my strategy. One of the questions that I found was the most challenging would have to be question 9.

Here is how I solved question 9.
Question 9: 4 17/20 - 1 3/20 + 2 11/20 = 5 25/20 or 6 5/20.
I solved this by subtracting 1 3/20 from 4 17/20 which gave me 3 14/20. Then I added 2 11/20 with 3 14/20 and that gave me 5 25/20. I knew that 5 25/20 was an improper fraction so I converted 25/20 to make 1 5/20. Lastly I added 1 5/20 with 5 and that gave me 6 5/20.
or
 1. 4 17/20 - 1 3/20 + 2 11/20 = 5 25/20 =  6 5/204 2.   17/20 - 1 3/20 = 3 14/20
3.   3 14/20  + 2 11/20 = 5 25/20 = 6 5/20

That isn't the end of my follow up activity and I will be blogging the rest of my Maths when I have finished some more. I hope that you understand my strategy in working out question 9 and if you have found errors you can just write it in the comment section. 😀
Question: What are you learning for Maths this week?
